Ralph Lauren is renowned for his outstanding fashion designs. He was born Ralph Lifschitze in 1939 in New York, but later changed his last name to Lauren. Ralph Lauren started to study business but soon realised it wasn’t for him, and in the early 1960s he joined the Army for two years. He founded his business in 1967, after gaining experience of designing ties. It was during this time that Lauren created the highly successful Polo label, and then brought out a fashion collection for men a year later using classic fabrics and patterns. In 1971 he designed a line for women, followed by the now famous mesh polo shirt.

The company was traded on the stock exchange in the 1990s, and has brought out several more brands as well as designing luggage, home designs, accessories and a line of luxurious perfumes.
